"Be" - Red Letter Challenge Week 1

We’re in the middle of the first week of the Red Letter Challenge at Brandon Community. This has been an incredible journey for me and I hope it’s been good for you, too! If you need a book, they are available at the Welcome Center in the lobby at church.

Week 1 focuses on “being”. For me, it’s easier to do than to be . . . I enjoy getting things done, starting projects, and thinking about the projects I can start. Sitting down, just “being” can be difficult for me because my brain wanders. Sometimes I even get feelings of guilt as I “be”, because there are so many things I could be doing and every moment I’m just resting or “being” is time I am not doing anything else.

This week God has been challenging me to just be with him . . . no agenda, no requests, no action items . . . just to be with him. I’d love to tell you it’s been easy but that would be a lie. It’s been rough. It’s been frustrating. But it’s been life-giving. Here’s a couple things that I am doing to simply “be” with Jesus:

  1. Begining the day with scripture. I’m reading through the book of James

  2. Sitting in silence listening for the whisper of God in the midst of the morning

  3. Instead of picking up my phone to flip through my social media feed or checking the news, I open up my YouVersion App and spend some time re-reading my morning reading, or reading a Psalm or two.

Nothing major . . . nothing too out of the ordinary . . . but these habits are slowly changing how my mind operates. Imagine what “being” with Jesus throughout the year will do!

How is week 1 coming for you? I’d love to hear how it’s going - comment below!

Grace and Peace, Pastor Matt
